Tungurahua Volcano, also known as "Mama Tungurahua", is an active volcano located in the Andes mountain range, just 20 kilometers (12.42 miles) from the town of Baños de Agua Santa. With a height of 50216 (16.456 feet) meters above sea level, Tungurahua offers an exciting challenge for lovers of mountaineering and adventure.

This 2-day tour will take you to the summit of Tungurahua, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Ecuadorian Andes, including Chimborazo, Altar, and Carihuairazo. Along the way, we will cross diverse landscapes, from lush cloud forests to Andean páramos in good condition.

Recommendations:

  • Equipment: It is recommended to bring warm and waterproof clothing, hiking boots, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, water, and snacks.
  • Acclimatization: It is important to acclimatize to the altitude before starting the ascent. It is recommended to spend at least one day in Baños de Agua Santa (1820 meters above sea level / 5971 feet) before starting the hike.
  • Physical condition: The ascent to Tungurahua volcano is a demanding activity that requires good physical condition.

Itinerary

Tungurahua summit

Day 1:                                

1:00 PM: Departure from Banos in a private vehicle.

1:40 PM: Arrival at the entrance control, located at 2,800 meters above sea level (9,186 feet).

1:45 PM: Start of the hike to the refuge, located at 3,800 meters above sea level (12,467 feet). Approximate duration: 4 hours.

5:45 PM: Arrival at the refuge. Acclimatization, rest, and hydration.

7:00 PM: Dinner and overnight stay at the refuge.

Day 2:

1:00 AM: Start of the ascent to the summit of Tungurahua volcano (5,023 meters above sea level / 16,479 feet). Approximate duration: 6 hours.

7:00 AM: Arrival at the summit. Enjoy the panoramic views of the volcano and its surroundings.

8:00 AM: Start of the descent to the refuge. Approximate duration: 3 hours.

11:00 AM: Arrival at the refuge. Food, hydration, and rest.

1:00 PM: Start of the descent from the refuge to the "Pondoa" entrance control. Approximate duration: 3 hours.

4:00 PM: Return by vehicle to Banos
